Karen called to let Edie know Greg was on his way over to pick up the punch bowl set for the Christmas Eve party that evening. After the call, Edie busied herself hoping to have all her own Christmas decorations complete before Greg arrived. I want him to see I’m in the Christmas spirit, even though I’ll be all alone this year. She was just finishing tacking a second stocking to the fireplace mantel when she heard the doorbell. She patted the second stocking lovingly, and then did a quick lookover in the foyer mirror. Unsure up to the last how she wanted to look when Greg arrived, she’d chosen what she planned to wear to the party: short red wool dress, black stockings, and strapped heels. That way she could always claim she’d decided to get ready early for the party, without signaling any ulterior motive for dressing that way to greet him. Through the front door window, Edie saw Greg’s shadow growing larger. One last glance in the mirror, as the doorbell chimed. What do I do if he makes a pass at me? That was immediately followed by how do I live if he doesn’t?

As she opened the front door, Edie knew there was something different about Greg the instant she saw him.

“Hello, Miss Lansdale. I think my mom called and said I’d be over to pick up the punch bowl and stuff.” He seemed older than the last time she’d seen him at his going away party for college.

“Yes, Greg. Come in. Your mom did call.” Is his voice deeper? Is that the start of a beard I see? As she stepped aside to let Greg pass, Edie thought she knew exactly how a matador must feel during his first veronica. Edie shuddered with lust as the musk of full manhood billowed off Greg like irresistible cologne. My God, I want him now.

“You look nice, Miss Lansdale.”

“Thank you, Greg.” Edie was relieved she was able to speak without stuttering or gasping for breath.

“Is that what you’re wearing to the party?”

“Yes, it is.” Do you like it?

“Cool.”

What does he mean by that? “So how’s college life treating you?” The two walked beside each other into the living room.

“Okay, I guess. A lot of adjustments to make.”

“I can imagine. But do you like it?”

“Oh yeah. It’s exciting. You’re on your own so much more than high school.”

Edie debated her next move, and then just went for it. “Would you like to sit? Do you have a few minutes?”

“Sure.”

Edie motioned to the couch. “Can I get you something to drink?”

“No, I’m fine, thanks.”

Edie nodded and smiled. She sat across from Greg in the winged chair. She decided against crossing her legs. “So, I’d bet you’ve met a lot of pretty girls already.”

“Not really. Why do you ask?”

“I’m sorry. That’s none of my business.”

“Oh, I don’t mind you asking. It’s just I haven’t had much of a chance to socialize. I think I might have bitten off a bit too much for my first term. I have six classes.”

“Yes, that is a lot.”

The pause in the conversation was most definitely pregnant, and Edie was relieved when Greg broke it.

“I was happy to hear you would be coming tonight, Miss Lansdale.”

“Oh, I wouldn’t miss it. Especially since I’d get to see my favorite college man. And please, we’re all adults here. Call me Edie.”

She watched Greg shift himself on the couch. “Okay, Edie it is. I guess college does make you grow up fast, huh?”

“You definitely look different, Greg.”

She watched him shift again. He cleared his throat. “Good different or bad different?”

“Oh, good different.” When Edie instinctively crossed her legs, she saw Greg’s eyes focus in on the move like radar. She let the rise in her hem rest where it was on her upper leg, pleased that Greg’s gaze didn’t move. “Is that a beard I’m detecting?”

“It’s an experiment. What do you think?”

“I think I’d like to see it grow out. That’s just one woman’s opinion, though.”

“Well, it’s an important one.”
