Allegra thinks life should be quiet, since she is a talented witch with a familiar, a beautiful large fat black cat with reflective green eyes who has the need to be territorial. Unfortunately, she runs a curio shop on a small street that an evil man has decided to buy so he can level the shops and build a tribute to himself.
To help fight evil, there are two interesting detectives of the night. One is a large powerful wizard who wants to invade Allegra’s bedroom. The other is a brilliant but clumsy human with talent in computers and puzzles.
What name can you give to a very fat cat that is so black that her hair almost looks blue in places? What can you call her when she looks up at you and what you see in the middle of that black face is startling light green eyes? They look so intelligent. Is it possible she knows what you are thinking? Of course, you want to pet her, to pick her up and cuddle her in your lap.
However, there are lap cats, and there are independent types who rule the world. Try to pick up one of them, and you’ll receive a warning meow from deep within her chest. Insist, and receive a bat without claws. Act like an Animal Control person, and you will have claw marks from her back legs and deep bites from those two front teeth that often remind onlookers of a vampire—those two canine teeth that always protrude just enough to look like a smile unless she is threatened.
If she pleases, she will allow a caress from those who know how, but there are few who understand the proper way to caress or scratch a queen cat. There are few who get the chance to be close enough to her even to try.
She sits up, fat and solid as she cleans her bottom legs and grooms her chest and stomach. A very fastidious, royal, lady is this black shadow of the night with the green eyes.
You might call her Midnight Queen, but there could be more than one Midnight Queen.
