What do you get when you put together a security guard and an electronics salesman? You get a married couple who are professional second-story men on the side.
When Amery and Myles decide to break into the home of a wealthy Denver couple, they find more than they were bargaining for -- the couple's dead bodies. Now all Amery and Myles want to do is avoid being arrested for the murders. That becomes more difficult when Fetch, a police detective and Amery's ex, shows up with questions they'd rather not answer.
Will they be able to help solve the murders without Fetch discovering that they had been at the scene of the crime -- and why?
Amery signaled for Myles to follow him along the side of garage to the shelter of the trees at the far end. First, however, he took a scanner from his bag and checked for to be certain there wasn't more security on the exterior of that side of the house than they knew about. He had been able to access the set-up of the security, which he had deemed primo -- as far as it went. Once they gained access to the interior, there were only a few motion detectors and cameras they'd have to avoid. Ones that, they presumed, were in the rooms where there was either valuable art or safes. The artwork didn't interest them. The safes did.
"So far, so good," Amery whispered. He took out his flashlight, using it to peer through one of the windows on the side of the garage, being careful not to touch the frame. "The Mercedes isn't in there, so we can figure they didn't change their plans."
"That and the fact the security lights are on, says you're right," Myles agreed.
"We can get onto the garage roof without alerting the security company, as long as we stay away from the windows." Amery said softly. "Then all I have to do is disarm whatever's on the bathroom window long enough for us to get inside."
Myles took a grappling hook from his bag. He tossed it up, expertly catching the limb of the tree next to the garage, climbed the attached rope, then stepped onto the roof, quickly followed by Amery.
They crouched there in silence for several moments, hidden from the street and the neighbors by the leafy branches of the tree. Then Amery moved to the window. Using the jammer he took from his bag, he set it to disarm anything within five feet of the window and turned it on. As soon as he had, he slid a slender probe between the upper and lower window casings to unlock window, opened the lower half, and crawled into the bathroom. Myles came in right after. Amery closed the window and turned the jammer off, thus reactivating the security until they left.
"Now comes the fun part," Myles said.
"We know the bedroom's clear of any extra cameras or what have you, meaning there's probably no safe in there," Amery replied as he opened the door from the bathroom. "Oh, hell!"
"What?" Myles asked. "There are cameras, despite what the security plans said?"
Amery shook his head, stepping aside to let him see. There was a body sprawled in the middle of the room -- male, and obviously very dead, blood staining the carpet from his bashed-in head. A few feet away there was another body, a woman's and equally as dead, they were certain, since there was blood pooling from under her head as well.
"If that's the Newells ..." Myles shuddered.
"Who else would it be?" Amery started toward them, stopping when Myles gripped his arm.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" Myles asked.
"What I'm trained to do, as part of being a security guard," Amery replied. "Checking the scene of the crime."
